PUNKNET 77 - Vapors

From Guilford, surrey came this one hit wonder. The Vapors was formed in 1978 by Dave Fenton (vocals & guitar), but when other original member (not know) were replaced by former Ellery Bops members Ed Bazalgette (lead guitar) and Howard Smith (drums) and bassist Steve Smith in beginning of 1979 things start to happen. Because Vapors were mod & power pop influenced it was not so big surprise that after Bruce Foxton (the Jam) had seen one of their first concert he and John "Paul's father" Weller (manager of the Jam) started managing the band. Soon band was booked as support act on Jam's Setting Sons tour.
In September 1979 they signed to United Artist and in next month so day light their first single Prisoners. But it was the one, Turning Japanese that made it big. It shot to no. 3 in UK and no. 36 in states which was really well for an UK power pop band. Very catchy and good LP New Clear Days peaked only at no. 44. In 1981, the Vapors released the more ambitious Magnets, which hardly rated a note from critics and sank without a trace; the group disbanded shortly after its release.
Discogarphy note: Anthology is a straight reissue of New Clear Days with four songs from Magnets tacked on to the end.
